We at the MWRA Advisory Board are thrilled to share that Boston-area beaches have once again been recognized as some of the cleanest urban beaches in the nation. This achievement is a testament to the continuous efforts to maintain high water quality standards, as highlighted in the recent Boston Globe article featuring Save the Harbor/Save the Bay’s latest Metropolitan Beaches Water Quality Report Card.
Despite facing the rainiest summer in seventy years, our beaches have maintained impressive water quality, with South Boston’s Pleasure Bay, City Point Beach, and M Street Beach earning perfect scores. The results speak for themselves, showcasing the dedication to keeping our beaches safe and clean for all visitors.
However, we are disappointed that the article does not acknowledge the heroic efforts of the MWRA and the ratepayers who have invested billions of dollars to clean up Boston Harbor. This environmental milestone would not have been possible without the financial sacrifices and hard work of these unsung heroes.
The MWRA and its staff have worked tirelessly over the years, constructing essential projects and maintaining the infrastructure needed to achieve these remarkable results. Their dedication and expertise have been crucial in transforming and preserving the Boston Harbor area, ensuring that our beaches remain clean and safe for the community.
We recognize that this success is a collaborative effort. We commend the Department of Conservation and Recreation, Save the Harbor/Save the Bay, DCR Commissioner Brian Arrigo, Representative Jessica Giannino, and all the dedicated individuals who contribute to this cause. Their relentless work ensures that our beaches remain a safe haven for recreation and community well-being, even as we face the challenges posed by climate change.
As we celebrate these accomplishments, we urge everyone not to forget those who have borne and continue to bear the significant costs associated with maintaining the high quality of our beaches. The ratepayers’ contributions have been pivotal in achieving and sustaining these standards, and their ongoing support remains crucial.
Together, we look forward to continuing our efforts to preserve and enhance the natural beauty of our Boston-area beaches for future generations. Let us not overlook the sacrifices made by our communities and the ratepayers to make this possible.
