With the recent passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), there is an unprecedented amount of federal funding for water and wastewater infrastructure. The IIJA includes $55 billion for new funding for water infrastructure. Also included is:
- $23.4 billion for the Drinking Water and Wastewater Infrastructure Act
- An additional $13.8 billion in SRF Authorization
- $15 billion for Lead Service Line replacement
- $10 billion to address PFAS – $5 billion through the SRF and $5billion as grants to the small and disadvantaged community grant program
The IIJA funding is in addition to Commonwealth’s share of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. As of this date, we expect $100 – $175 million in water and sewer infrastructure funding as well as $300 thousand to fund a study exploring expansion of the MWRA system.
Staff will continue to monitor these funds as more information is known, as well as any potential new funds. At this time, there are still ongoing discussions with the Administration’s Build Back Better Bill, which could provide additional funding.
